Jasper Products designed a custom work platform to support testing and repairs on the HS2 tunnel in Birmingham, UK. Delivered as a flat-packed kit, the modular system was assembled on-site with supervision and training provided for the local repair crew.
The design featured specially made frames, and bracing supports to create a multi-level workspace,
Made from Aluminium it was lightweight enough to push by hand allowing the unit to be moved along the tunnel on our specialised track and trolley system, this enabled quick setup in each new section.
The flooring was created from various shape of size platforms decked with non-slip marine ply. Internal steps and ladders used to gain access to the multiple levels.
Clip in handrails a 1100 mm and toe boards were added to complete the access platform.
The multi-level design ensured access to the entire tunnel surface so operators could inspect and work on all areas of the wall.
The customer provided tunnel drawings that showed all temporary and permanent fixtures that needed to be accounted for.
Our design team accounted for all the obstructions while keeping the system functional.
Once designed and manufactured the platform was assembled at our factory to test safety and efficiency of the erection process, this was essential so we could be confident that a safe access system was created, and any health and safety concerns were highlighted early in the process. Once we were satisfied a step-by-step pictorial and narrative manual was created.
All components were then labelled and packed, once delivered they were transported to the middle of the tunnel. The work Platform was erected in place within the tunnel in just two shifts.

Also, system remained with in the tunnel for the duration of the works and was repeatedly and easily moved along its length of several hundreds of metre’s with very little effort.
