Bespoke Access Platforms for a Central London Train Maintenance Depot

Jasper Products recently designed, manufactured, and delivered nine bespoke access platforms for a train maintenance depot in Central London.

Each maintenance road had different access requirements. Therefore, our design team developed a tailored solution for every location. To achieve this, we carried out multiple site visits and design reviews with the client. As a result, each platform met operational needs while supporting safe and efficient working practices.

work platforms designed Around the User

We equipped every platform with premium swivel castors. Consequently, operators can position the units precisely at the train driver’s door.

In addition, adjustable floor jacks provide a stable and level working platform. Operators can quickly secure each unit before use. As a result, this improves safety and user confidence during daily operations.

Solving a Key Access Challenge

One of the main challenges involved the varying gaps between the depot platform and train entrance doors.

To address this issue, we designed a unique drop-down cantilever ledge for each location. The ledge bridges the gap safely and, therefore, reduces the risk of trips or falls when entering or leaving the cab.

Furthermore, a simple locking catch secures the cantilever in the raised position when not in use. Operators can also lock it in place while moving the platform. Consequently, this feature improves safety throughout the depot and reduces potential hazards during transportation.

Specialist Jumper Access Platform

In addition to the standard access units, the project also included a dedicated jumper access platform.

This mobile unit features a triangular cantilever extension platform. Operators use it to access the power leads required during train testing and maintenance activities.

Moreover, the platform supports train departures from the depot. It allows trains to remain powered until they reach the third rail system outside the maintenance shed. As a result, operators can maintain a safe and reliable power supply during critical movements.

Access equipment Built for Durability and Visibility

To further enhance safety, we powder coated all units in high-visibility yellow. Consequently, the finish makes the platforms easy to see and helps reduce the risk of accidents around moving trains.

We manufactured the platforms using:

  • High-grade aluminium
  • Premium-duty swivel castors
  • Heavy-duty adjustable floor jacks
  • Long-life marine-grade non-slip plywood treads and landings
  • Yellow stair tread nosing’s for additional grip and visibility

As a result, the finished platforms provide safe, reliable, and efficient access for depot personnel. Furthermore, each unit meets the client’s exact requirements while delivering long-term durability in a demanding rail environment. Ultimately, the project demonstrates Jasper Products’ ability to develop bespoke access solutions that combine safety, practicality, and quality engineering.

Jasper Products successfully delivered a bespoke solution that combines innovative design, exceptional safety standards, and long-term reliability for one of London’s key rail maintenance facilities.
