Innovative Bespoke work Platform used in Tunnel works

Jasper Products designed a custom-made work platform for testing and repairs on the HS2 tunnel in Birmingham, UK. We delivered the system as a flat-packed modular platform.

Lightweight Multi‑Level Workspace

Bespoke frames and braces created a multi-level workspace. Additionally, the aluminium structure was lightweight, so the team could move it manually. Meanwhile, our specialised track and trolley system enabled quick setup in each tunnel section.

Safe and Accessible Working Areas

The flooring used non-slip marine ply with lift-out panels and hatches for easy access. Internal steps and ladders provided movement between levels. Furthermore, clip-in handrails at 1100 mm and toe boards completed the platform.

Designed Around Tunnel Constraints

The multi-level layout gave operators full access to the tunnel surface. As a result, they could inspect and work on every area of the wall. The customer supplied tunnel drawings showing all fixtures. Then our design team incorporated every obstruction while keeping the system functional.

Factory Assembly and Safety Verification

After finishing the design and manufacturing, we assembled the platform at our factory. This confirmed the system’s safety and highlighted any concerns early. We then produced a detailed step-by-step pictorial and narrative manual.

Fast Installation and Efficient Operation

We labelled and packed all components and transported them to the central tunnel section. The crew erected the platform in two shifts, far faster than steel scaffolding. Finally, the system stayed in the tunnel for the full works period. It moved easily along several hundred metres with minimal effort.
