Project Overview
Jasper Products has completed the installation of a 200‑metre GRP train access platform, designed to support the full refurbishment of several Southeastern rolling stock units over the next two years. The raised walkway, manufactured from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), provides a safe and efficient working environment for maintenance teams removing and replacing train interiors.
This durable GRP system improves safety, speeds up workflow, and offers a long‑lasting, low‑maintenance solution ideal for rail depot environments.
GRP Access Ramps and Walkway Design
The GRP walkway system includes:
- Two 5‑metre GRP access ramps positioned at either end of the 200‑metre platform
- A 1.5‑metre‑wide walkway allowing safe movement of operators and equipment
- Smooth, level access for wheeled trolleys, enabling efficient removal and delivery of components
- Integrated storage space along the platform to reduce trip hazards and maintain a tidy work area
These features ensure safe, continuous access throughout the refurbishment programme.
Manufacture and Installation of the GRP Platform
- Manufactured at our Mold, Flintshire production facility
- Installed by our in‑house team within two weeks
- Delivered and completed on schedule to meet the client’s project start date
Our controlled manufacturing process ensures consistent quality, while rapid installation minimises disruption within the depot.
Precision‑Cut GRP Support Legs
The installation required 400 individually cut GRP support legs, each tailored to:
- Compensate for variations in the concrete fall
- Adjust to the rise and fall along the length of the train shed
- Maintain a level, safe walking surface
- Ensure consistent alignment with train entrance doors
This precision engineering guarantees a stable and reliable platform for daily operational use.
GRP Platform Construction and Materials
Key construction elements include:
- Each support leg securely bolted to the depot floor for maximum stability
- 25 mm GRP mesh grating fixed using stainless steel “M” clips
- Continuous mesh installation between both access ramps
- GRP mesh cut in situ to accommodate existing services and infrastructure
- All cut edges sealed with a protective varnish coating to prevent water ingress and extend service life
These materials provide excellent corrosion resistance, slip resistance, and long‑term durability—ideal for demanding rail environments.
Summary: A Safe and Durable GRP Train Access Solution
This GRP train access platform delivers a robust, low‑maintenance, and corrosion‑resistant solution for rail refurbishment projects. With precision engineering, rapid installation, and a focus on operator safety, the system is now fully operational and supporting a major rolling stock upgrade programme.
